The chairman of the Union of Moldovans of Transnistria, Sergei Sandu , believes that the renaming of the Moldovan language into Romanian will lead to a loss of self-consciousness of the Moldovans. Sandu gave a comment to RIA Novosti after the ruling Action and Solidarity party of Moldova approved in the first reading the renaming of the state language of the country to Romanian.
According to this project, the words “Moldovan language” in any grammatical form are replaced by the words “Romanian language”. In addition, the words “state language”, “official language” and “native language” are replaced by the words “Romanian” if the state language of Moldova is meant.
Sandu suggested what other consequences this decision might have. “Probably, the country will not be called the Republic of Moldova, but some kind of “sub-Romania,” said the chairman of the Union of Moldovans. He added that Pridnestrovie will always keep the Moldavian language, which was formed back in 1359 during the reign of Bogdan the First.
Some modern linguists believe that “Romanian” and “Moldavian” are different names for the same language.
