Home » What Armenia PM Wants to Make Europeans Understand?

Zhoghovurd daily of the Republic of Armenia (RA) writes: Yesterday, during the session of the [parliamentary] inquiry committee investigating the circumstances of the war [in 2020], RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke about the possibilities of ending the 44-day war in the course.

Reflecting on the possibility of ending the war in October, Pashinyan noted: “[Russian] peacekeepers should be deployed not only in Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor, but also in Meghri [city of Armenia] to ensure the communication of the western regions of Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan.

“I did not agree to that either. I did not agree to the creation of a non-RA controlled layer, i.e. a corridor, in the RA area, saying that I agree with the road, but not with the corridor. That is, my position, as it has been before, is that I believe yes, the roads should be opened, yes, the western regions of Azerbaijan should have the possibility of communication with Nakhichevan, but it cannot be a corridor, and it should be under the RA sovereignty and jurisdiction.”

However, let’s quote point 9 of the [trilateral] statement of November 9, 2020: “All economic and transport links in the region shall be unblocked. The Republic of Armenia shall guarantee the safety of transport communication between the western regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic with a view to organize the unimpeded movement of citizens, vehicles and cargo in both directions.

“Control over transport communication shall be exercised by the Border Guard Service bodies of the FSS of Russia. Upon agreement reached between the Parties, construction of new transport communications linking the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic with the western regions of Azerbaijan shall be ensured.”

That is, the [aforesaid] document signed by Pashinyan clearly notes the unblocking, which should be monitored by Russian border guards, but Pashinyan has been talking about its inadmissibility, yesterday and before, too. It’s just that now Pashinyan wants to show the Europeans that he will not allow a road controlled by the Russians, while in 2020 he signed under it.
