Poland demanded from the EU to introduce new sanctions against Belarus

Warsaw has sent a request to the ambassadors of the EU member states, advisers to the presidents and heads of government of the EU countries, as well as to the European Commission and the Council of Europe for the immediate adoption of sanctions against Belarus. This was announced by the Permanent Representative of Poland to the European Union Andrzej Sados.

The reason for such actions on the part of Poland was the sentencing in Belarus against Ales Bialiatski and other Belarusian oppositionists. In this regard, Warsaw called for the fastest possible reaction in the form of a package of EU sanctions in response to the “regrettable actions of the Belarusian regime.”

Recall that Belarus has been under tough Western sanctions since the end of 2020, and Poland is one of their main initiators. In early January, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the imminent introduction of another sanctions package against Minsk, but this has not happened since then. A new round of anti-Belarusian hysteria turned out to be associated with the sentence of the Nobel laureate from Belarus Ales Byalyatsky and three of his colleagues, who were accused of smuggling, organizing and preparing actions that grossly violate public order. Bialiatski was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
