France Prepares for Political Crisis Ahead of No-Confidence Vote

French lawmakers are set to debate no-confidence motions against Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government on Wednesday. These motions, introduced by the left-wing and far-right National Rally, could force the government to step down if approved.

The motions follow Barnier’s controversial move to bypass parliamentary approval for a contentious budget bill using special constitutional powers. The opposition parties are expected to form a strong alliance to challenge the government.

The budget bill, which includes tax hikes and spending cuts, has sparked widespread disagreement. Negotiations over the bill stalled over the weekend.

If the government falls, it’s unclear what will follow, as new parliamentary elections can’t be held until June. President Macron would also have to appoint a new prime minister.

Despite political uncertainty, the French stock market showed positive movement following the announcement of the vote, with little change in bond yields.
