Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, stated that supporting Ukraine is an investment in European security, not charity. She highlighted the need for a strong focus on defense spending, food security, and cybersecurity as key elements of national and regional security.
Kallas emphasized that Russia, along with other global threats, requires a united response, especially from the US. She argued that the US must address Russia’s actions to maintain global leadership, alongside its concerns over China.
Kallas believes that the best approach to dealing with Russia is through supporting Ukraine’s victory. She is confident that US support will continue due to bipartisan backing in Congress.
Kallas also pointed out that the US’s continued involvement is crucial for Ukraine’s defense. She mentioned concerns from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán about Europe’s ability to sustain support alone.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the importance of working with the US to counter the Russian threat, noting its broader implications for global security, including in the Indo-Pacific.
