The European Commission on Monday approved a Data Privacy Framework aimed at ensuring safe data flows between the European Union and the United States.

The approval came in tandem with a decision adopted by the European Commission concluding that the U.S. “ensures an adequate level of protection — comparable to that of the European Union (EU) — for personal data transferred safely from the EU to the US companies under the new framework.”

The new framework “will ensure safe data flows for Europeans and bring legal certainty to companies on both sides of the Atlantic,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The new framework will be subject to periodic reviews, with the first of these to take place within a year, the European Commission said.
